The installation CODE UNKNOWN [Re_Sync] - Notes on a Film Excerpt was conceived for Weserburg - Museum für Moderne Kunst Bremen, takes Michael Haneke's film CODE INCONNUE (2000) as its point of depature. It analyses a key scene in Hanke's film in which another film scene- within the narration- is being dubbed. Mario Pfeifer re-transfers this scene into an adapted script, giving the moving images a quasi a-prior text source. This coplementary, German version of the script - with an additional establishing shot as well as an end sequence, referring to Haneke's usual strategies to begin or end a film - is mounted full frame on the exhibition walls in a white cube setting. Within these wall texts, designed in a conventional script raster, text images sized like film posters carry 10 quotations by Michael Haneke - questions he drafted before the production of the film and published afterwards - functions like allegations rather then questions in the embracing raster of the wall text. Framed in black, these images stick out from the wall, creating an impression of collage/montage, considering the authorship of both text pieces and its visual representation. In the following/neighboring room, Haneke's film excerpts in it's original French version with German subtitles - previously documented in the wall texts - is screened in a continuously loop, while the scene plays forward in normal speed, but is later on re-winded with high speed to start again.
